Sailor KOP Color Urushi Kaga Slate Blue Fountain Pen. Urushi lacquer is a very special natural matrial, which is made from the sap of trees, which only grow in East Asian countries.
This Urushi is in very limted supply. The deciduous Urushi tree takes 15 years to reach maturity. The Urushi sap is then mixed with other compounds to form the lacquer.

When hand applied to the surface of the pen and kept in high humidity it slowly sets into a hard durable and lustrous finish, which is wareproof and resistant to most other materials.

This special lacquered surface protects the pen in the best possible manner. The Urushi is applied in up to 12 separate coatings, all of which have to fuly harden and fry before the next application. The total process can take up to two months to prepare.

About Sailor

In 1911, Mr. Kyugoro Sakata, an engineer from the historic seaport of Hiroshima, picked up a fountain pen brought from England by a sailor friend. Fascinated by what he held, he decided to become the one to produce exquisitely crafted writing instruments in Japan of the highest specification and writing performance.

Mr. Sakata decided to establish the Sailor Pen Company with the expectation that the business would expand internationally as a sailor travels. Thus, the company became the first to start production of writing instruments in Japan and is still one of the oldest with high-quality writing products worldwide.
