Pilot Custom Urushi Black Fountain Pen. Featuring a black lacquer finish inlaid into the ebonite, a large fountain pen with a soft writing touch. Fitted with a large No 30 size nib that allows the writer to fully enjoy the ‘flex’ of the pen. Bringing satisfaction to its user, the thick barrel has a black lacquered finish that imbues the fountain pen with a glossy appearance and fits comfortably in the hand. A fountain pen of the highest quality. It features the Roiro Urushi technique by maki-e artisans. A Pilot Con-70 pump converter is included for use with bottle inks, but you can also use Pilot IC-100 cartridges. Varnish (lacquer) has been used in Japan for thousands of years to make writing instruments. The Pilot Custom Urushi is made from Japanese ebonite lacquered using only pure Urushi lacquer. Like Namiki’s writing instruments, the Pilot uses a varnish technique called Roiro, which requires considerable time and skill to create an even and glossy finish. About Pilot

The first PILOT fountain pens began to be produced in Japan in 1918. Ryosuke NAMIKI, a mechanical engineer and professor at the Tokyo Merchant Marine Collage, was captivated by the ingenuity of these fountain pens that his contemporaries called “10,000 year brushes” because of the uninterrupted flow of ink. Using his industrial engineering skills, he created a high-quality prototype. After forming a partnership with one of his colleagues, Masao WADA, he established NAMIKI MANUFACTURING COMPANY and began manufacturing fountain pens. As a tribute to their other shared passion, the sea, the couple used the brand name PILOT, referring to the flagship of the fleet. In 1938 the company became PILOT PEN Co Ltd. Then in 1989 to PILOT CORPORATION. A modern name that spans decades of creativity, innovation and design. PILOT is recognized as a world leader in instrument document technology.
