About Pelikan

The beginnings of the Pelikan Company trace back to chemist Carl Hornemann, who on April 28, 1838, offered his customers oil paints, watercolors, and so-called “farbige Dinten” — colored inks. This historic price list, now preserved in the Pelikan archives, laid the foundation for the company’s production line from which the world-renowned Pelikan trademark was born.

The piston filling mechanism and innovative ink feed became the hallmarks of Pelikan fountain pens. After World War I, self-filling pens using pressure or lever systems, along with “safety” pens filled by eyedropper, dominated the market — yet Pelikan’s piston system soon set a new standard in writing technology.

During the 1980s, fountain pen writing experienced a revival. Though no longer an everyday necessity, it regained its place for personal letters, signatures, and as a symbol of sophistication. In 1979, Pelikan introduced the “Signum,” a model designed specifically for adults. But it was in 1982, with the launch of the Souverän M400 — a modern reissue of the original 400 — that Pelikan fully reclaimed its legacy. The pens appeared nearly identical externally, with only subtle improvements to the ink feed and filling mechanism.
